Correspondence covers the period from 7/43 to 12/43. SZ was sent to Sicily to set up the Bombing Survey Unit with its main base in Palermo. A detachment was sent to Messina which concentrated on the effects of incendiary bombs. Included is correspondence between these two sub-units, with the Air Ministry Headquarters and with various other army and air force units. Bombing effects witnessed in Palermo and Messina form the basis of the survey. Most of the correspondence is however of an administrative nature and concerns the running of the Unit, personnel recruitment and related issues, and the difficult working conditions.
