Reply to SZ's letter of 16/12/43 [SZ/BSU/5/1/147]. Bird defends his position on the use of sortie records. He points out that SZ has no one in Palermo competent to correlate fire-susceptibility of targets, fire damage and the weights and types of incendiary attack. Bird accuses SZ of making the fundamental error of regarding incendiary attack as a mere variant of high explosive bombing. He reminds SZ of the experimental experience which does exist within the team. Bird asks to be returned to England as SZ's remarks refer to him as one of the field staff, and not the advisor on incendiary attack and fire as which he came out.
