Contains 36 items which include minutes of meetings of the Defence Committee (Operations) of the War Cabinet held on 5/4/44 and 13/4/44 and associated correspondence, memoranda and reports. The Defence Committee authorised the AEAF's programme of air attacks subject to close monitoring of the effects and of the reaction of the French people (see also [SZ/AEAF/2/7]). Among the contents are: estimates by MOHS RE.8 of numbers of casualties; papers discussing the basis on which the casualty estimates were calculated; a memorandum from Air Chief Marshal Leigh-Mallory to General Eisenhower setting out the consequences for Overlord if the AEAF transportation plan were to be abondoned; target lists; a memorandum by the Director of Bomber Operations, Air Ministry, for the Chief of the Air Staff and the Prime Minister on the pros and cons of deploying delayed-action bombs in attacks on rail centrs; and the English text of a warning leaflet addressed to the populations of areas adjacent to rail centres scheduled for attack.
