Howell, E. A. recipient
Acknowledgement of receipt of Howell's paper 'Note the relative efficacy of high explosive bombs in the attack of towns' [SZ/AEAF/1/21/6]. SZ writes that he assumes that the "prescription" in Howell's paper relates to "the type of attack carried out by Bomber Command [in the strategic air offensive against Germany] and not town demolition of the kind we are concerned with when we plan for the creation of road blocks." For this task SZ is recommending 500 lb and 1000 lb bombs dropped in precision attacks and "where Bomber Command is concerned, a sprinkling of 400s [sic]." He points out that the latter "will not produce the kind of craters in roads in which we are so interested."
