Material consists of poems and correspondence, manuscript and typescript. Relevant material, such as early drafts, research and notes for poems, may be found in the sub-series for poetry collections (SMa/1/2-5), poetry notebooks (SMa/1/1) and in the series for Diaries and Notebooks (SMa/7).

Each file corresponds to poems gathered for a specific purpose, other than to form a collection. Files are organised into chronological order. Poems that have been gathered by SMa for collection purposes are filed after the individual, collected poems for that specific collection (SMa/1/2-5).

Material within each file is organised in the order imposed by SMa.
