Translating and interpreting -- Awards

Crampton played a large part in setting up the Bernard Shaw Prize for translation from Swedish, and she herself won no fewer than 15 prestigious prizes and awards. In 1984 she was awarded the Schlegel-Tieck Prize for her translation of ‘Marbot’ by Wolfgang Hildesheimer. She twice won Mildred L. Batchelder Awards for translations: ‘Ronia the Robber's Daughter’ by Astrid Lindgren in 1984 and ‘No Hero for the Kaiser’ by Rudolf Frank in 1987. In 1991 she received the Eleanor Farjeon award, for distinguished service to the world of British children's books. In 1996 the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT) Pierre-François Caillé Medal was given to Crampton for her services to translation.

British Honour Book for Translation (1998) selected by British IBBY for ‘No Roof in Bosnia’ (pub. 1997)

The Marsh Award (1999) for the best translated book for young people. ‘Final Journey’ by Gudrun Pausewang (pub. 1996).

The Marsh Award (1999) runner up. ‘No Roof in Bosnia’ (pub. 1997).

The Hans Christian Andersen Award for best translation of children’s literature (1980).

The Mildred Batchelder Prize (for the best foreign children’s book published in the US). PC won twice in 1984 and 1987 and was runner up in 2000. ‘Ronia the Robber’s Daughter’ by Astrid Lindgren (1984); ‘No Hero for the Kaiser’ by Rudolf Frank (1987); ‘Vendela in Venice’ by Christina Bjork (runner up or honour prize, 2000).

Schlegel-Tieck Prize, for the best adult translation from German (for ‘Marbot’, 1984).
