Adrian has a Class III while Helen has a lower II. Adrian was therefore unlikely to be offered the job at York and thought they should look in Aberystwyth.

Adrian was in a personal battle with the V-C and the Registrar over the compulsory introduction of academic dress. The V-C had ruled that conscientious objectors to academic dress would not be recognised.
