‘The V-C spoke to the students on the development plan for the University, all quite interesting but not likely to affect us unless we stay on for masters degrees. As expected he kept referring to “my” plan, “my” colour scheme, “my” architect, and “my” advisory committee and “what my architect likes to call …”’

‘We have also had the first news of a work of art whose erection at the village is imminent. We hope it will prove useful as a prop for bicycles, and if necessary for stringing up the V-C?’

Adrian was likely to attend the annual Peace Conference at Swanwick.
