The Swedish government established an International Institute for Peace and Conflict Research in 1966, with a Scientific Council of 24 members. SZ was invited to be a founder member of the Scientific Council and urged to accept by Alva Myrdal and Lord Chalfont, then the British Minister for Disarmament. Chalfont considered that SZ's "presence on the Council would do much to fashion a cutting edge [and] firm basis of realpolitik" in the deliberations of the Council [letter to SZ, 7.12.66]. Alva Myrdal's husband, Professor Gunnar Myrdal, chaired SIPRI's governing Board from its foundation until 1973.
