Beaches -- Protection, Military
Zuckerman, Solly, 1904-1993 recipient
Bernal requests SZ's advice regarding tactical collaboration in close support of troops and transport in the open, and neutralisation of coast defences, particularly open gun pits. Unless SZ has objections, production and training would go ahead in the deployment of 250 m.c. bombs fused to explode just off the ground. Small bombs were turned down as being inconvenient to use, and not having sufficient negative effect on morale.
Bombardment of gun pits is discussed. Bernal feels that while the efficiency of bombs may be adequate, sometimes the wrong targets are picked out.
Circulation of the Tripoli report is reported to be held up as the Oxford group were not able to get consistent pictures of the actual bombings.
Two copies.
