Combined operations (Military science)
Some files are concerned directly with the operations BLAZING, CONCUBINE and JUBILEE, these were codenames for raids on Alderney, Crete and Dieppe respectively. General correspondence, and research work on underwater explosions and medical aids, are included.
The files relate to work carried out by SZ and J.D. Bernal during their secondment to Combined Operations HQ (COHQ) and includes some post-war correspondence and associated material. The two were recruited in the spring of 1942. At the end of that year they were sent under the auspices of COHQ and the Air Ministry to study air support operations in the North African Campaign. SZ spent most of 1943 in the Mediterranean Theatre where he became involved in the planning of air operations (see SZ/BSU).
The contents deal with the planning of air support in relation to Operations Blazing, Concubine and Jubilee, codenames for raids on Alderney, Jersey and Dieppe respectively, and also include correspondence on research on underwater explosions, and medical aids for such problems as seasickness and the transport of the injured.
