"Craters produced by exploding 50-kg. S.C. bombs with their centres of mass at 1 ft., 2 ft. 6 in., 8 ft. 6 in. and 16 ft. respectively below ground level, in clay soil at Richmond Park, were all smaller than those calculated from data given in A.R.P. Hand-book No. 5.

"The manner in which the permanent earth movements decreased with distance from the bomb was found to be similar for the three shallower bombs.

"The horizontal earth accelerations at the surface of the ground were measured in the case of the deep bomb, and were found to be of the order of 5 g. at 10-20 ft. from the bomb.

"The blast pressures and positive impulses at selected distances from the bomb 1 ft. deep were respectively about one-fifth and one-half of those observed for a similar bomb exploded on the surface." Tables and graphs are included.
