"Tests have been made in chalk soil at Chinnor, Bucks to investigate the nature of the detectable ground disturbance produced when 1 lb. charges of Polar Ammon gelignite were exploded at depths sufficiently great to ensure camouflets. This depth was found to be between 5 and 6 ft. In every case where a camouflet was obtained there was an accompanying system of surface cracks, together with a small amount of ground upheaval. The system of cracks and surface upheaval was much less pronounced than was previously observed for similar charges exploded in clay soil." Graphs and drawings show earth disturbances due to camouflets in chalk soil.
Report to the Ministry of Home Security.
