Letters on various matters, including the logistical effects of air raids, military research and information gathering.

Contains 15 items that include correspondence with John Randall of Birmingham University on luminescent materials, and with Roy Harrod of the War Cabinet Office on the effects of air raids on industrial production and related information derived from the special surveys of Hull and Birmingham. An untitled note of 9.5.41 evaluates the effects of air raids on Clydeside, Merseyside and Bristol docks.

In a letter of 24.4.42 SZ was invited to meet Mr Justice Singleton [then investigating the effectiveness of Bomber Command’s operations]. Later in the same year SZ was called to a meeting with scientific advisers to the Home Forces to be briefed on information to be gathered during his visit to the Middle East (letter from M. Miller of the Admiralty, 23.11.42). A letter from the botanist Professor G. Blackman, 7.10.43, discusses the circulation to the armed forces of a pamphlet on tropical plants, and correspondence from early 1944 discusses a visit by SZ to the United States to discuss wound ballistics research.
