Scope and content
Attached is a covering letter 'Reports on three types of target...' to the Commanding General, US Ninth Air Force, signed by Brigadier-General D.M. Schlatter, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations, and dated 4/8/44. The "Three types of target" considered are: marshalling yards; bridges; and cutting of rail lines; attacks on rail centres at Criel, Bethure and Mautes Gassicourt, on bridges over the rivers Seine and Loire and on railway lines to the Normandy battle area from north and south of the Loire and east and west of the Seine are examined specifically. In respect of marshalling yards the companion paper "Results attained by the destruction of railway transportation centres" is cited. It is concluded that attacks on bridges and railway lines were more productive, relative to the effort expended and battle damage sustained by attacking forces, than those on marshalling yards.
