Thunderbolt (fighter plane)
Loose minute sent to C-in-C, S.A.S.O., Deputy S.A.S.O., and "D/O" of Operations, AEAF which reports the analysis of attacks on bridges in support of Operation Overlord to 29/5/44. SZ concludes by stating that about 100 Medium or Fighter Bomber sorties were needed to destroy or seriously damage a bridge and that up to 29/5/44 in no case had a bridge been destroyed by means of a 500 lb bomb. He reports that P.47 (Thunderbolt) aircraft appeared more successful in attacking bridges than other fighter bombers and that "more detailed analysis is in hand".
