Jonathan says that when he returns to England next July he intends to join the forces, unless Cambridge University has a service unit. He knows what people in Britain think of the children who left for North America and does not want people to think he left England when she was in danger and only returned when Germany was on the brink of defeat, and rather than contribute to the war effort he went to university.
