Scope and content
F.W.B. Charles' typed essay of 8/5/79 discusses the life and work of Walter Gropius in England, "[F.W.B. Charles'] reactions to [Gropius] and what he stood for in the Modern Movement, resulting from a brief spell of working for him from 1936 to 1937 .... in the Office of Gropius and [Maxwell] Fry." Charles mentions working with Reginald Vaughan, Bronek Katz, Jack Howe, Eric Lyons Baldwinson and Gordon Cullen. He mentions the opening of the first MARS Group exhibition, Gropius' association with Marcel Breuer, Chermayeff, Wells Coates, [F.R.S.] Yorke, Schwartz and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy. Charles also discusses briefly the collaboration between Henry Morris and Gropius over Impington [Village College] and names [Jack and Molly] Pritchard, Herbert Read, Julian Huxley and H.G. Wells as Gropius "allies." Charles briefly compares Walter Gropius and William Morris.
