Inostrannaya Literatura
001 is a letter from Chinghiz Aitmatov to Doris Lessing. Aitmatov invites Lessing to attend a round-table discussion on “The intelligentsia on the threshold of the new century: results and prognoses” to be written up in Inostrannaya Literatura.
002 is a reply from Lessing in which she declines, with regret. She mentions her special relationship with the Soviet Union and Russian friends, but states: “For the last ten years or so I have refused all invitations to conferences and discussions about the state of the world, where writers are expected to make pronouncements or take stands.” and “Writers are better as individual voices, than when they are signing ‘we the undersigned...’”
