[Correspondence with the Akademie der Künste]
21/02/1983-04/03/1983
4 Letters (typescript and MS)
001 is a letter from the Akademie der Künste to Doris Lessing, signed by multiple names including Günte Grass. The Akademie invites Lessing to join the second meeting of the Academy of Arts in West Berlin on 22/04/1983, which will discuss “the situation of peace movements in East and West” and the possibility to “proclaim peace”.
002 is a letter from Lessing, declining. “While I agree [wholeheartedly] with every and any attempt to reduce armaments and to prohibit, eventually, nuclear arms, I find myself in strong disagreement with the policies of the peace movements generally. In brief, I think that we ought to be pressing our governments to shelter us in the event that there is nuclear war.”
