Adrian writes about the social activities in Norwich; the school backgrounds of the students; and the sailing club.
They’d had a coffee evening with the Chemistry Don ‘whose wife is the Meetings University Correspondent.’
‘The Vice-Chancellor is quoted as saying that we have drawn our students from the full range of educational establishments, except Eton and Borstal. It is also reckoned that we are all here on merit. Nonetheless there seem to be a lot of people from boarding schools who look for the results of their old school’s rugby matches in the Sunday papers, and with headmasters at the Conference, fathers in the colonial service etc.. Also from the St Christopher and FSSW type public schools. In contrast there is a clique at one table from industrial area grammar schools, smoking like chimneys and keeping overmuch to themselves.’
‘The Sailing Club is inaugurated now - with its first woman commodore.’
