Scope and content
Elections of President-of-the-Union and of a permanent Students Council would be taking place over the following month. Also, a Halloween party and a party in November.

Adrian, Mike and Biddy-from-Cardiff had had their first tutorial with Dr Croghan in nominal change. Adrian had finished his first Physics essay (the 4th Dimension) for Dr Joy.

‘The event of the week was the closed circuit TV link with that other University in East Anglia.’ The Scientists had only one lecture, an interesting lecture by a Geneticist ‘on his experiments with hairy fruit flies but then spoiled the effect by inventing a set of figures on a similar pattern for I.Q. in order to “prove” how essential diversification of education (in Public Schools) is. To crown it all he wore a bow tie which none of our people do, except author/part-time lecturer Angus Wilson which I suppose excuses him.’

Adrian was still the only bearded undergrad.

Some people had already visited home. A lot of girls were going steady and several already engaged (e.g. Monica).

Mentions a visit to Wheat Fen Broad (10 miles east of Norwich at Surlingham) to examine fungi.

The UCCA had sent an urgent questionnaire to establish who went to which universities.

Adrian went to a meeting where he met the ‘University Correspondent’ – wife of the German Chemistry lecturer who lives at no. 396; and Brewin, Assistant Registrar, who lives at 398 [Unthank Road].

The next day they would have individual introductions to V-C Thistlethwaite.

London ITV had interviews with everyone in preparation for the Dateline programme. The BBC (regional) was doing a staged entry-of-student, watching their every movement from the moment they started packing for university.

‘We spent the evening, following a vague welcoming speech from the Registrar (we make the rules, you break them).’

‘My landlady had provided towels, shoe cleaning stuff, radio, pop-up toaster, and just say if you want tv.’

‘The Common Rooms are surprisingly lacking in conveniences – no gas rings, radio, tv, just heat and v. comfortable chairs. There is of course a bar, also the bookshop/stationer.’

‘My adviser’s name appears to be Dr J. Noble-Nesbitt but I expect we’ll get over that.’
