In document DC/mh.3513/01/PRO 8 March 2005 which summarises quotes from earlier dates: 1965 - Lasdun adopted the East Anglian – Dutch term ‘Plein’ to describe the potential campus site – meaning a space surrounded by nearby buildings.

“New Plantings… In the University Plain should be few and of special interest… e.g. Maples, Liquidambar, Nyssa, Red Oak, Amelanchier, etc set against evergreens.”
