The main role of smoke was to protect the assault, and the ships and craft lying off shore during the period between assault and withdrawal. Smoke was also used to protect soldiers once they were ashore. The smoke laying is discussed in three parts: smoke laid by aircraft, smoke laid by ships and craft, and smoke laid by soldiers on the beach.
