Spain -- History -- Civil War, 1936-1939
Zuckerman, Solly, 1904-1993 recipient
Russell informs SZ that during [the Spanish Civil War], officials in Barcelona issued the instruction to keep the mouth open during air-raids, rather than the instinctive reaction to clench teeth and hold breath. Russell understood at the time that this action allowed breath to escape from the lungs and the chest wall could absorb some of the blast. Russell will ask Carol Kretschmeyer if he knows any more about it.
