SZ does not think keeping the mouth open can prevent blast damage to the lungs. Lung injuries are caused by pressure on the chest not by sudden distension of the lungs with air. SZ does not know why the instruction was ever issued, unless it was to avoid ear drums bursting by equalising the pressure, or to prevent people biting their tongues.
