The compressive strength of mild steel cylindrical projectiles striking normally upon a bullet-proof steel plate at velocities between 1,300 and 2,550 feet/sec. were determined. Various lengths of cylinder between 0.5 and 1.25 in. were tried, and it was found that the compressive strength was independent of the initial length of the specimen. The compressive strength of the steel was found to be raised considerably by the high rate of strain to which it had been subjected by the impact. A table and graph are included.
