The relative penetrations of steel balls were plotted against the striking velocities. Various sizes of balls were used. The penetration of each size of ball increased with velocity until about a striking velocity of 2,000 - 2,800 foot/sec. when the penetration began to decrease, and the diameter of the crater to increase. The results indicated that the decrease in penetration could have been due to serious deformation of the ball prior to breaking up, since, in that region all the balls were either broken up or deformed by the impact. Graphs and tables are included, also photographs of the steel balls after having been fired, and photographs of the craters caused by steel balls fired into cast lead.
