The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) was founded in 1971, under the sponsorship of the Aspen [Colorado] Institute for Humanistic Studies, as the International Institute for Environmental Affairs (IIEA). The impetus for its foundation was the impending UN Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm in 1972. SZ was a founder member of IIED’s Board and Council.
IIED published the ‘theme book’ of the Stockholm Conference, 'Only One Earth' by Barbara Ward and René Dubos. A copy of the draft text of the book is in File SZ/IIED/2 and much of the content of the series relates to IIED's early days and the Stockholm Conference.
The file of correspondence includes copies of agenda and minutes of some Board and Council meetings and related papers. The documents include annual reports, reports and papers of conferences, symposia and other events organised by IIED. There are also documents relating to various other UN conferences on environmental issues.
