SZ, as an endocrinologist with specialist knowledge of the primate reproductive cycle, was called upon from time to time by the Family Planning Association (FPA) and similar organisations to assess the quality of scientific papers or research proposals that they received. He was also, by the 1950s, quite heavily involved in efforts to tackle the problem of world population growth. In 1958, having failed to secure his services as a speaker at its AGM, the Association invited SZ to become one of its vice presidents. He accepted.
