Luce, John David,
This article comments on the Government's defence review and the inconsistency in the deployment of British strength. Defence expenditure was cut yet British arms and bases remained all over the world. Sir David Luce and Mr Mayhew resigned because the Armed Forces were being given too large tasks and too few resources. The scrapping of the carrier programme in 1970 is questioned, and the cost of the F-111, their bases, and their ability to protect seaborne commerce. A national debate on defence is suggested.
