Richards encloses a letter from Cuthbert Greig regarding craftsmanship in the furniture industry [PP/19/4/2]. Richards does not think the reduction in the need for craftsmen due to mass production is necessarily an entirely negative development. Attractive furniture can be produced by machine, but craftsmen need not die out entirely as there will always be people who want hand-made items and tasks that a machine cannot do. It is a difficult question and one which the [Furniture] Working Party and the Ministry of Education need to consider.
