"Thus when the war came in 1939, the flats had established themselves as an important centre for the intellectual life in Britain while the building, as Jim Richards pointed out almost 20 years later, was "nearer to the machine à habiter than anything Le Corbusier ever designed ... and remains unique and completely successful in practice.""
