Concerns Jack Pritchard's efforts to obtain domestic permits for Margarete Kohon and [Emmy Epstein]. Jack Pritchard expresses his "indescribable horror" and gives an account of conditions endured by Margarete Kohon's family and other German Jews in Germany in 1939, described by [Dr Lotte Hess], a friend of Margarete's, who is now working as a maid near Birmingham. He asks May to write a letter to Margarete stressing the value of her teaching qualifications and "to say less about the cooking end of it .... because they are now giving tests to see how much cooking experience they have", this leads to severe delays. Jack Pritchard tells May that she may have to agree to increase the girls' wages, "it helps to persuade the Home Office that we are not wage cutting." Annotated on recto
