MS. 8 pages. 2 leaves. With envelope, marked by PC as no. 5. PC is writing from Nürnberg [Nuremberg].
PC thanks her parents for returning the photos. In view of their touching comments she will re-return them. She asks them to send the exposed (undeveloped) film.
She’s had a letter from Nan [Nancy?], who had received the ‘Nylons’ (stockings) PC had sent. PC offers her coupons (rations) to other family members. She describes other items of clothing she could get Nan.
She’s received her etching back, now framed.
PC relates a story about her [ornamental] hippopotamus, Horace, and makes the first mention of Wolfgang Hildesheimer [future partner]. She describes visiting the Zugspitze the previous weekend. The snow had melted and there were cracks in the crevasses of the glacier. They took a cable-car to just below the summit and walked the rest of the way. She was unafraid of the straight drop on both sides, unlike Mac [Charles Macnamara]. There was sunshine on the top when they came through the cloud and they could look across Bavaria.
PC’s mother had made a dress for PC’s sister [Jennifer]. ‘There isn’t anything nice in for her just at the moment here.’ She offers to get her mother linen and china if needed. PC asks about her sister who had been ill.
She is pleased she’s now started Spanish and their living allowance had increased by £60 per year, which takes her to £660.
She hopes her mother will take her to the garden party next time. ‘Poor old Staniland – dash it, he shouldn’t have got killed then.’
PC had been with ‘Big Peter’ [Peter Lawrence] to look for a ring for his fiancé Friedl [Friedel] (German assistant).
Dr Russell had rung her to congratulate her on her promotion, and he sent his regards to PC’s father.
