Iraq War, 2003-2011
Letter, 9/9/2008. MS. With envelope, title page and page 353 from ‘Nothing to Lose'. Gerald respects LC’s right to be opposed to the Iraq war yet he ruined the character of Jack Reacher by attributing to him his own opinions, which weren’t in keeping with Reacher’s character. Gerald will not be buying another LC book, or be recommending him to his friends. The lines he finds offensive are highlighted.
Letter, LC to D. Gerald Coker, 24/9/2008. TS. LC is glad Gerald enjoyed the first 11 books. He is also glad that the people on this continent in 1775 did not share Coker’s meek obedience to their rulers and betters. “Otherwise America would never have been founded.”
Letter, D. Gerald Coker to LC, 30/9/2008. Gerald thanks LC for witing but not for his intended insult, which confirmed: “you were channeling your own opinions through your heretofore excellent and enjoyable character, Jack Reacher.”
