DL/A-Z//LONDON/004 [from Phil Turner to Doris Lessing, 03/04/1985]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes of the recent Government cuts and a £30 million grant taken from the London Borough of Camden. Asks whether the community will join them in their campaign. Writes that the "inconvenience" caused and that the responsibility lies with the Government, not the Council.
DL/A-Z//LONDON/005 [from Doris Lessing to Phil Turner, 05/04/1985]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
A short letter to Turner. Writes that she does not imagine that he is "likely to care about the views of the people you are supposed to represent", but wants "for the record" that she disapproves of the way Turner has been "handling this" (referring to the recent Government cuts).
DL/A-Z//LONDON/007 [from Doris Lessing to Phil Turner, 15/07/1985]
Letter, 1 leaf, typed.
Writes that she does not support Government policy, and that she is "no longer a socialist of your kind. though a socialist I remain". Discusses the "extreme left". Mentions socialism. Writes that she is "proud to be called reactionary".
DL/A-Z//LONDON/013 [from Phil Turner to Doris Lessing, 15/04/1998]
Letter, 3 leaves, handwritten.
Discusses their "brief correspondence" in the 80s. Writes about the recent library disputes and strike planned by staff. Discusses the "timing" of the strike, which he sees as significant. Writes that the Socialist Workers Party have "taken control" over leading the dispute, and that he doesn't understand why the workers are striking.
DL/A-Z//LONDON/016 [from Andrew Johnston to Doris Lessing, 20/04/1998]
Letter, 3 leaves, handwritten.
Thanks Lessing for sending him a copy of Turner's letter (item 013). Writes that "we" (the strikers) were most upset that he wrote that the Socialist Workers Party were in control, "deeply insulting". Writes that the strike is being run by "ordinary library workers". Discusses the future of Camden's public libraries.
