Scope and content
[1995]

032 is a letter from Doris Lessing to Jonathan Clowes, asking him to forward some comments to the Daily Mail regarding an article about Love, Again. She paraphrases the article header as "She left her babies for the shores of love", characterises such an interpretation of her work as stupid, and states that decent people despise papers like the Mail and the journalists that work for them.

[1996]

033 is an undated letter from Lessing to Burkeman, reporting back from dinner with Tony Cartano of Albin Michel. She lists sales figures for Love, Again, outlines promotion plans, states that "Volume Two" [Walking in the Shade] will be ready this year and announces that she will write a novel next. She asks for an advance to fall within a specific period, and directs Burkeman to her accountant.

034 is a fax from Brie Burkeman of Jonathan Clowes to Lessing regarding issues including invitations for events, overseas tours, interviews and article submissions.

035 is a letter from Lessing to Burkeman, responding to the proposals in 034. She declines most things. In response to a "reproach" from Burkeman, she describes the boredom of attending lengthy lunches with publishers she does not know in strange countries. She lists lengthy, boring meals and banquets. At the bottom she hand writes "I am 77 years old this year."

036 is a fax from Isobel Pilsworth of Jonathan Clowes to Lessing confirming travel arrangements to Spain.

037 is a letter from Pilsworth to [possibly novelist] Robert Harris regretting that Lessing cannot meet him.

[1997]

038 is an undated letter from Lessing to Burkeman referring to problems with the proof for Walking in the Shade [see DL/A-Z//HARPER C/3/090 and 079]. She explains that the US versions of the proofs are being fine-tuned based on an old draft, and suggests a way of identifying whether any proofs received are correct.

039 is an undated letter from Lessing to Clowes, written following a trip from Nancy Shields and Lisa Alther. She responds to an article about German directors shared by Clowes, stating that it explains her difficulty dealing with Birgitta [no surname supplied], director of adaptation of The Marriages Between Zones Three, Four and Five. A handwritten note directs Burkeman to fax the missive to Clowes.

040 is a letter from Lessing to Clowes, referring to a communication from Stuart Proffitt "rather in the tone of a stern but kind headmaster" and requesting a chat as soon as possible. She refers to a scene that Proffitt wants her to remove from an [unnamed] publication, enclosing it with the letter [scene in fact missing] and stating that Proffitt does not know much about her work. She seeks support in the dispute from Terry Karten.

041 is a letter from Clowes to Lessing, responding to 040 and indicating that he will talk to the recalcitrant Proffitt about changing the photograph on a book jacket.

[1998]

042 is a letter from Burkeman to Lessing, enclosing letters and registration forms for the Authors Licensing and Collecting Society relating to claiming payment from the loan of books in Germany.

043 is a letter from Burkeman to Lessing outlining the complicated legal situation surrounding the remake rights to The Grass is Singing. Enclosed are letters from Michael Raeburn, Jeremy Conway and representatives of Jonathan Clowes. Burkeman states that the situation is so complex that Lessing should obtain a legal opinion before attempting to remake the book into a film.

044 is a letter from Burkeman to Lessing, informing her that her Scandinavian editors will contact her once they have read Mara and Dann.

045 is a letter from Burkeman to Lessing, covering issues including the publication date for Love, Again in Denmark, a proposed Finnish stage adaptation of The Good Terrorist [faxes outlining the creative proposal enclosed] a potential adaptation of The Fifth Child [faxed CVs of creative participants enclosed], the Belfast Literary Festival [faxed invitation enclosed] and an interview with a German television company [faxed invitation enclosed].

046 is a letter from Lessing to Louise [surname unknown] of Jonathan Clowes [probably], negotiating literary and promotional events she will attend.

047 is a letter from Burkeman to Lessing regarding the extension of film rights to The Fifth Child, enclosing copies of an amendment letter [missing] for Lessing to sign.

[1999]

048 is a letter from Lisa Whadcock of Jonathan Clowes to Lessing enclosing Greek double taxation forms for Lessing to sign.

049 is a personal letter from Burkeman to Lessing, written from Greece where Burkeman is on holiday. Mentions Stuart Cohen's Invisible World.
