Contains correspondence concerning a merger of the Heinemann Group with Thomson Books Ltd who were the owners of subsidiary companies Sphere Books Ltd, Hamish Hamiton Ltd and Michael Joseph Ltd. Correspondence with Bankers Trust International Ltd discusses the fees for such a merger. Other early confidential correspondence on the proposal is included as well as a schedule on “the logic for considering a merger”.

Includes an article from The Bookseller on Thomson Books, a schedule of the company’s profitability and capital utilisation items and ratios, and press cuttings on reorganisation.

A letter towards the end of the file from Henry Ansbacher and Co. Ltd (5.6.1984) states that nothing can be done until Gordon Brunton’s resignation. Brunton was President and Chief Operating Officer of International Thomson Organisation Ltd.
