Churchill, Randolph, R.S.
Contains correspondence relating to the first volume of a biography of Sir Winston Churchill by his son, Randolph Churchill. This was published in 1966 by William Heinemann. The Daily Telegraph had bought the sole rights to papers belonging to Winston Churchill and these papers formed the basis of the biography. Curtis Brown was appointed Literary Agent on behalf of the Daily Telegraph.
Included are rights agreements between Chartwell Trustees, C & T Publications Ltd and Heinemann; author and publisher agreements; correspondence from Chapman and Co. (solicitors) relating to payment and contract agreements; papers on the luncheon to mark the launch of the biography; early figures for copies sold; and correspondence relating to loans. Correspondents are primarily CP of William Heinemann and Peter Ryder of Thomas Tilling Ltd.
In a letter dated 9.9.68, CP announced that the three main publishers – The Telegraph, Houghton Mifflin, and Heinemann had reached agreement that Martin Gilbert should be appointed as biographer for the remaining volumes.
