Scope and content
AH writes to publishers and submits his novel. He describes it as a satirical comedy (letter dated 27/8/99 in file 'Gently Mistaken'). Includes letters of refusal. Correspondence is with Constable Publishers, Jonathan Cape Ltd, Marion Boyars (US), Victor Gollancz, Quartet Books, Collins, Souvenir Press, the Bodley Head, Peter Owen, Riverside Studios and Gregory & Radice (Author’s agents).

In a letter to Constable (27/2/85) AH introduces Lakeby (Blakeney to the cognoscenti). There is also a leaf describing Lakeby (Blakeney on the Norfolk North coast) “I went yesterday into strange country, into Lakeby; Quiet it was, quiet for the out-gone tide; I lay at afternoon among the tamarisks and sea lavender listening to the restless sandpipers,
gulls and sweet-fluting redshanks …”
