Title
Gently Coloured (1969)
Date/s
1968-1971
Scope and content
Includes agreement and correspondence with Cassell; reviews (press cuttings); a jacket; correspondence on whether to use the word ‘whitey’ or ‘whity’ and the appropriateness of the word ‘shit’ used by the character Tallant. The ethnic make-up of the communities of Ealing-Aton-Southall is described by the publisher as well as the preference of areas for the ‘Sharkey Sunshines’.

AH writes in his letter to a fellow writer, 7/12/69
“What I was trying to say was ‘Don’t love, don’t hate, just let go and be natural – Taoism applied to colour. Taking one attitude provokes the other, so avoid taking an attitude – ‘Sort of loving by not- loving’, as the young detective says in the book.”
