Scope and content
Correspondence is mainly with publishers Cassell and Company. Includes refusals from publishers for AH’s first novel, 'Gently Does It'.

From Collins:
“the victims of it are not interesting, sympathetic or exciting enough to hold ones interest until the final unveiling”.

From Curtis Brown:
“the story itself was much too contrived and lacking in suspense … the personality of Gently simply doesn’t come across and it isn’t nearly enough just to give him the trade mark of eating peppermint creams”, 8/12/53.

From Hodder and Stoughton:
“We do not feel that the plot and situations are really quite interesting enough for the book to make its way in what (as you will no doubt realise) is a highly competitive field.” 26/1/54.

Also included is Cassell’s acceptance letter, 16/6/54.
