The notebooks include many of AH’s early ideas, summary notes, synopses and early manuscripts for the Gently novels and other works; also his immediate ‘diary’ entries which reflect on his writing practise.
Many of the notebooks AH/14/8 - AH/14/33 contain plots and sketches for the George Gently novels.
AH/14/1 Sanity Hall or The Philanderer’s Progress.
MS in notebook, 1946.
AH/14/2 Notebook, 20/8/48 – 19/8/52.
Includes Talking Turkey, Red Roofs (poem), Why they didn’t Hang Thatches, Them Bones, Queens Review (Boadicea).
AH/14/3 Blue notebook.
Chapter synopses, 29/4/53 – 5/8/53 which includes an inspector but Gently is not mentioned. Also two pages of summary notes for Gently novel 2. Gently, gently, catch a monkey, 1954.
AH/14/4 Blue notebook, 27/5/54 – 16/6/54.
MS including the character Theckla.

Containing MS of 'Return of the Earthmen', 1958.

Alain Roubaise, Lucien Roubaise; S de B. (a love that comes to an end); AH’s sisters and yachting; advertisement for a 3-berth yacht for sale – Mocking Bird, built 1948.
