Scope and content

Adam Foulds' second novel is 'The Quickening Maze' (2009), a part-historical part-fictional account of the relationship between John Clare, Matthew Allan - the head of Clare's mental asylum, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. It was shortlisted for the 2009 Man Booker Prize for Fiction.

The chapters in the printed work are as follows: Autumn, Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring. The working title appears to be 'John's Dream'.

Unless otherwise specified, mentions in the catalogue of Autumn, Winter and Spring refer to the first instances of these named chapters in the book.
