Watkinson gives his views on "the current nuclear situation" ahead of the opposition's visit to Washington. He claims McNamara's recent speech and an article by Lippman have damaged Anglo-American relations. George Brown will see McNamara whilst in Washington and Watkinson thinks it would be useful if Ormsby-Gore could brief McNamara on "the nuances of British politics". Brown will be looking for any hint from McNamara that United States nuclear weapons policy differs from the UK's.
