Zuckerman, Solly, 1904-1993 recipient
Congratulates SZ on the award of his Order of Merit although he deplores "the uselessness of so much good science being devoted to war even when used against the Nazis."
The letter is almost illegible, Bernal's stroke had seriously affected his hand-writing, and a typescript transcript is attached. In the second volume of his autobiography, referring to this letter, SZ wrote: "I found the reference to the Nazis amazing. I kept wondering if in the light of events, he would have preferred them to have won." Solly Zuckerman 'Monkeys, Men and Missiles', p.39.
