The Archives was approached by Bee Korn of the Norfolk Council of Christians and Jews who offered to provide the Zuckerman Archive with a copy of the filmed recording. Tim O'Riordan has given his written consent for his talk to be recorded and a copy added to the Zuckerman Archive.
Scope and content
Video recording (digital file) of a talk by Tim O'Riordan OBE DL FBA, Emeritus Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, reflecting on Solly Zuckerman's role in the establishment of UEA's School of Environmental Sciences (ENV) in 1968.
Introduced by Bee Korn of the Norfolk Council of Christians and Jews, the talk outlines Zuckerman's interdisciplinary vision, which brought together geology, ecology, geophysics, oceanography and atmospheric sciences. O'Riordan discusses Zuckerman's belief that scientific research should be connected to human behaviour and informed by public policy, while policy should in turn be guided by scientific evidence.
The talk also examines the seminar series organised by Zuckerman during the 1970s, which brought together leading figures to discuss issues including regional policy and environmental impact assessment.
