RD travelled to Australia as part of his research for 'Touching Wood'.
Before April 2001 RD had journeyed from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock, Glen Helen, Hermannsburg, and the Aboriginal outstation of Utopia. On a camping journey, with the ethno-botanist Peter Latz, RD followed the bed of the Finke River up towards the Tanami Desert.
