Scope and content
Crampton corrects ‘Louis’ on the facts of the obituary he wrote about Wolfgang Hildesheimer. The 16 year old was brought to England with his parents in 1933 by the directors of Unilever, for whom his father worked. While at Nuremberg they did not discuss their work and Wolfgang did not associate with the ‘handful of staff members of Jewish descent who worked there in an understandably vengeful spirit.’

Wolfgang spent his leisure time in Munich where there was a post-Third Reich resurgence of anti-totalitarian art.

Crampton remembers his ‘wit and acuity accompanied by a sometimes bewildering vagueness, his enormous and never deliberately wielded charm.’

‘He and his second wife Silvia enjoyed a long and devoted married life.’
